Whos Opening & WhereSterns (513-579-7666) opened a 73,000 sq.ft. store at a strip center in South Brunswick, NJ. The location on Route 1 is the companys 24th location and their 11th in NJ. The retailer plans to open eight to 10 more stores concentrating on densely populated areas.
One Price Clothing Stores, Inc. (864-433-8888) has amended its expansion plans for 2001. The company sites operational discipline in reducing their estimate from 25 openings to no more than 10 stores. The retailer closed four stores, opened seven units and remodeled seven stores in the third quarter of 2000.
Shoe Carnival (812-867-6471) plans to open 15 stores in fiscal 2001. The shoe retailer opened 15 stores in the fourth quarter of 2000. The chain includes 166 units and may increase their expansion plans in the third and fourth quarters if conditions allow.
Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse (336-658-4000) will open a 150,000 sq.ft. store in Las Cruces, NM. The store will be located at Interstate 25 and US 70 and is scheduled to open in fall 2001. The store will be the 620-unit chains second in NM (Albuquerque).
Home Depot (770-433-8211) opened the companys 21st Expo Design Center in Concord, CA. The concept began in 1991 but expansion plans are being ramped up. The chain plans to operate 200 stores by 2005.
Starbucks Coffee (206-447-1575) announced plans to open 1,100 locations worldwide in fiscal 2001. The coffee retailer opened 417 company operated stores and 361 licensed units in the past year. The chain operates 3,501 stores worldwide.
Nordstrom (206-628-2111) is in discussions to open a second store in the Raleigh/Durham, NC market. The retailer will open at the Streets at Southpoint Mall in Durham and may become the fifth anchor at Triangle Town Center in Raleigh. Both stores are scheduled to open in March 2002. The company also has plans to open a store at Southpark Mall in Charlotte, NC, slated for 2002. Nationwide, Nordstrom has plans for 20 new stores over the next three years. Currently, the company operates 120 stores in 24 states.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-725-2981) raised the number of openings planned for fiscal 2001 from 28 to 34. Five new markets were entered in the third quarter of fiscal 2001: Salt Lake City, UT; Cedar Rapids, IA; San Jose, CA; Buffalo, NY and Sacramento, CA. New stores were also opened in Richmond, VA and Bakersfield, CA. Openings are planned for Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; New Orleans, LA; Sacramento, CA; San Diego, CA and two in Chicago, IL. The company expects another 36 stores to open in fiscal 2002.
Cato Corporation (704-554-8510) plans to open 80 to 120 stores annually for the next five years in order to build a national presence. The company will roll out a new prototype store in mid-2001.
Santa Barbara Restaurant Group (805-563-3644) is looking to expand the LaSalsa Mexican Grill concept in 2001. The company opened one unit in the fourth quarter of 2000.
Quick Chek Foodstores, Inc. (908-534-2200) opened a 5,300 sq.ft. store with gas pumps on Route 31 in West Amwell, NJ. The 105-unit chain operates in Northern and Central NJ and plans to open eight stores annually. Construction is underway in South Plainfield, NJ and stores are planned in Hackettstown and Lafayette.
International Automated Systems (801-763-9965) will open its first fully automated self-cashiering supermarket, trading as U-Check, in Washington County, UT. The company will break ground during the first quarter of 2001. The store will utilize the automated fingerprint identification machine developed by IAS which will verify the customers digital fingerprint with the one on their shoppers card. The financial transaction will be handled by BankOne and will allow customers to purchase groceries, rent videos, purchase gas and fast food.
Goodwill Industries of the Miami Valley (937-461-4800) will open a 15,000 sq.ft. store in a former Dillons Restaurant at State Route 725 in Centerville, OH. The non-profit organization will tear down the existing building on the 1.73 acre site and build what will be the largest of its 13 stores. Goodwill will close the existing Centerville location upon completion of the new unit.
Pier 1 Imports (817-878-8000) will open in front of Kohls on State Route 159 in Fairview Heights, IL. The opening will involve the relocation of the companys Commerce Lane store.
Taco Johns (307-635-0101) will open multiple units in Wichita, KS; the Phoenix Valley, AZ; western TX and southeastern NM. The company has signed franchise development deals to enter those markets. Franchisees own 98% of the chains 450 units. El Pollo Loco (949-399-2000) will open 100 units over the next five years. Growth will focus on Southern CA, but will also occur in Northern CA, AZ, TX and NV. The chain operates 272 units in CA, AZ, NM and TX.
Guess Kids (213-765-5629) will open four outlets in 2001.
Whole Foods Markets (512-477-4455) will open stores in Santa Monica, CA; Portland, OR; Pittsburgh, PA and Toronto, Canada. The 117-unit chain has 23 stores in development with an average store size of 34,000 sq.ft.
Walgreens (847-940-2500) will open two 15,000 sq.ft. stores near Augusta, GA. The location at Washington Road and Bobby Jones Expressway will open this summer, while the Columbia and Belair Road site will open in the fall of 2001. The company opened 462 stores in 2000 and plans to have 6,000 stores operating by 2010.
Burlington Coat Factory (609-386-3314) will open a 93,000 sq.ft. store at Britton Plaza in Tampa, FL. The site is a former Uptons store and is the companys fifth Tampa Bay area location.
Desert Moon Cafe (845-267-3300) will open at the Lincoln Court Shopping Center in Frazer, PA. The store is the first of a five-unit franchising agreement with PA Dreamin, Inc. for Chester County, PA. Desert Moon is an eight-unit chain that plans to open 165 locations in the next several years. The company operates in six states and is seeking operators and locations in the Boston, MA to Washington, DC corridor.
Jennifer Convertibles, Inc. (516-390-4000) opened 12 locations during fiscal 2000, and combined adjacent stores into single stores at 16 locations. Plans call for up to 10 new stores during fiscal 2001.
Panera Bread Co. (314-918-7779) has announced agreements with two new franchisees to develop 52 new bakery-cafes in the four states of DE, PA, NJ and FL. The first franchises are slated to open by the end of 2001. The company now has franchise commitments to develop 542 bakery-cafes. Panera Bread currently operates 231 locations in 27 states.
Emporium (541-746-9611) is opening a location next spring in the Village Shopping Center in Cottage Grove, OR on Highway 99. The store was formerly a Stage clothing store.
