Who's Opening & Where Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8000) is planning to open as many as 70 freestanding restaurants this year. The company began its expansion in Columbus, GA with an opening last month. The new Chick-fil-A concept features an indoor interactive playground and an interior that has wood accents. The company currently operates 1,130 restaurants throughout 37 states and Washington, DC.
Lowe’s Cos. (336-658-4000) is planning to open a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse in Elizabethton, TN this year. The superstore will be 116,000 sq.ft., plus an additional 31,000 sq.ft. for a garden center. The company currently operates 950 home improvement stores throughout 45 states, including 36 stores throughout TN. Lowe’s also has stores under construction in McMinnville, Harriman, Shelbyville and Millington, TN. The company also is planning to open a 94,000 sq.ft. store with a 28,000 sq.ft. garden center in Zephyrills, FL. The store will be situated on a land area of 17.3 acres. Area retail includes Wal*Mart Supercenter.
Bassett Furniture Direct (276-629-6000) is planning to open two stores throughout the Atlanta, GA area this year. The company is looking to open a total of five stores throughout the area during the coming four years, with locations in south Atlanta, Fayetteville/Peachtree City, Buckhead and Douglasville.
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (800-426-4840) is planning to open a store in Folsom, CA later this year. The store would be the company’s third in the Sacramento, CA area. The Folsom store is expected to be around 24,500 sq.ft. The company currently operates 70 stores throughout 24 states.
The Gymboree Corp. (650-579-0600) is planning to open three stores during April at Westfield Shoppingtown Valley Fair in Santa Clara, CA; Bellevue Square in Bellevue, WA and one on Burlingame Avenue in Burlingame, CA. The company plans to open 10 stores by year’s end.
Hart Stores, Inc. (514-354-0101) is planning to open two stores throughout Quebec, Canada this Spring. Locations will be in Cowansville and Duvernay. The Cowansville store will be 25,000 sq.ft. and will be located in the Domaine du Parc Shopping Center, while the Duvernay store will be 33,000 sq.ft. and will be located in the Centre Duvernay Shopping Centre. Hart Stores, Inc. operates 64 mid-sized department stores under the following tradenames: Hart, Bargain Giant and Giant des Aubaines. Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (303-846-6000) is planning to open 20 to 22 corporate restaurants and 15 to 17 franchised restaurants during fiscal 2004. The company currently operates 115 company-owned and 103 franchised Red Robin restaurants.
Tuesday Morning Corp. (972-387-3562) is planning to open approximately 60 to 70 stores this year. The company currently operates 577 stores throughout 42 states.
Palm Beach Tan, Inc. (972-931-6595) recently opened the following stores throughout Cincinnati, OH: 3768 Paxton Avenue at the Hyde Park Plaza; 4756 Fields-Ertel Road in Kings Mall and 6123 Glenway Avenue at Western Village. The company also is planning to open a store at Westchester Village, a center located at Princeton Glendale Road in Hamilton, OH. Up to three additional locations are set to open in the second half of this year.
Hooters (770-951-2040) is planning to open a restaurant in along South College Street in Auburn, AL during June. Area retail includes Country’s Barbecue and Zaxby’s. The company currently operates seven locations throughout AL, including two in Mobile and Birmingham and one apiece in Huntsville, Dothan and Tuscaloosa, AL.
Dick’s Sporting Goods (412-787-1330) is planning to open a store at the Washington Square Mall in Indianapolis, IN.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter at the former Eastwood Mall site in Birmingham, AL.
CBRL Group, Inc. (615-444-5533) is planning to open a Cracker Barrel Old Country Store at Mercury Plaza, a center located at the intersection of Mercury Boulevard and Power Plant Parkway in Hampton, VA. Cracker Barrel currently operates VA locations in Newport News, Williamsburg and Hampton Roads.
Boddie-Noell Enterprises, Inc. (252-937-2800) is planning to open a Texas Steakhouse & Saloon at Mercury Plaza, a center located at the intersection of Mercury Boulevard and Power Plant Parkway in Hampton, VA. Texas Steakhouse & Saloon currently operates 28 restaurants throughout NC, VA and WV.
Reeds Jewlers (800-Reeds-24) is planning to open two stores during the Spring. The company currently operates 91 stores throughout 18 states.
Border Foods, Inc. (505-937-2800) is planning to open 20 Au Bon Pain locations throughout MN by 2009. The first bakery/cafe is slated to open later this year. Border Foods, a Yum! Brands franchisee, also operates approximately 165 Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell locations throughout MN.
Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. (303-664-4000) is planning to open more than 100 Old Chicago restaurants and 10 Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery locations throughout the U.S. by 2008. Rock Bottom has signed multi-unit franchise agreements to put 70 Old Chicago locations throughout 13 states by 2010. Recently, Rock Bottom signed franchise contracts to open 15 new Old Chicago locations in MI, plus 15 units in Cincinnati and Dayton, OH, as well as Lexington and Louisville, KY. Expansion plans are in place for Old Chicago restaurants in CO, central FL, IL, KS, NE and WI. Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery is looking to grow its presence in CO, IN, OH, PA and VA, as well as expanding into the new markets of NV and Washington, DC. Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. currently owns and operates 54 Old Chicago restaurants and 34 brewery restaurants operating under the tradenames of Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, ChopHouse & Brewery and Walnut Brewery. The company also owns and operates SingSing, a dueling piano bar concept with three locations.
IHOP Corp. (818-240-6055) is planning to open seven IHOP restaurants during the coming eight years throughout Boston, MA; Reno, NV and a portion of El Dorado County in CA.
Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) is planning to open three freestanding stores by the end of fiscal 2004, six additional Burlington Coat Factory stores and to convert two of the previously closed Decelle stores to Cohoes Fashions stores. The company currently operates more than 330 stores offering brand-name clothing, bath items, children’s apparel and furniture, gifts, jewelry, linens, and shoes. Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) is planning to open approximately 190 to 200 drive-in units, including 165 to 175 franchised locations. Sonic currently operates and franchises more than 2,700 restaurants throughout 30 states, primarily in the South. Some locations also offer dine-in seating and drive-thru service. About 80% of Sonic’s restaurants are franchised.
